The ‘70s are arguably one of the most iconic decades when it comes to both fashion and beauty trends and have made several comebacks over the years. Legendary stars like Farrah Fawcett, Debbie Harry and Bianca Jagger, as well as a hugely influential music scene, have ensured that this period is frequently revisited and continues to impact on modern day culture.
Continuing on from the more natural ‘60s Flower Power look by moving into the glamorous era of disco before edging towards the ‘80s with edgier, punk-inspired face paint, it was a versatile decade when it comes to beauty trends.
And with these three very different but equally striking standout styles, there is a look for every occasion.
The two most iconic hairstyles to emerge from the ‘70s were long manes worn poker-straight with a centre parting and the famous Farrah Flick: feathered layers teased into tumbling curls. This bouncy, voluminous do has once again been given a modern update at the Fall and Winter shows in New York and will be a glamorous look for the coming season.
To recreate either of the two looks, apply a heat protection spray like Paul Mitchell’s Hot Off The Press before you start. For both ‘70s styles, begin by blow-drying your hair with a big, round brush. Use a flat iron to either straighten your tresses into sleek, glossy strands or “flip” your ends outward to create big curls a la Farrah. A touch of hairspray, like Tresemme’s 24 Hour Body will keep your locks in place.
The fresh-faced make-up look of the flower children is best translated into a modern-day version with glowing skin and beautiful thick but natural eye lashes. Laura Mercier’s illuminating stick is perfect for applying highlights and adding shimmer to your complexion, while Benefits They’re Real mascara will give your lashes show-stopping volume and length without clumping up.
To evoke the glamour of Studio 54’s decadent disco days, smokey eye make-up is essential. For an on-trend Fall/Winter take on this classic look, try Mac’s Nocturnelle eye-shadow, which has a fashionable purple sheen. Apply a pair of Mac’s 12 Lash for added drama.
For an edgier rock chick look, recreate Blondie front woman Debbie Harry’s iconic beauty style with a bright red pout and black kohl eyeliner. Mac’s Sheen Supreme lipstick in New Temptation will make your pout standout, while Bourjois’ Queen Attitude kajal kohl eyeliner gives an intense but smooth finish.
