Emma Hill has promised she won’t “drop off the face of the earth”.
The designer was serving as creative director at Mulberry, but her six-year tenure came to an end with the brand’s London Fashion Week show yesterday.
While she’s not sure where she’ll be in a year’s time, Emma promises not to disappear on the fashion industry.
“I’m not dropping off the face of the earth,” she assured British newspaper The Telegraph.
Mulberry previously only catered to the needs of ladies who wanted luxury handbags and luggage.
Emma introduced ready-to-wear during her time at the label, explaining her decision to do so.
“Without a catwalk show it’s very hard for an accessories brand to create the kind of buzz you need these days to get international recognition. You need the catwalk in order to tell a story, and, really, to do catwalk, you need clothes,” she revealed.
The designer joined Mulberry during a tough time, when sales were dropping.
Luckily business picked up again and Emma believes she knows the key to success.
“[It's] not to look at the figures too much. I’ve always believed that if you come up with great design it will sell,” she said.
“Sometimes recessions can play to a brand’s strength, if what you’re doing is perceived to be authentic. Lots of people wanted to buy into a British label. We were doing classics, but they were a bit different and there’s always been that feeling in this country that even if you economise on your clothes, you should have good accessories. I think what Mulberry represented was affordable luxury.”
