Bersih 4.0 ‘inevitable’ if EC ignores demands, Ambiga says - ( M4L4YS14 )

PETALING JAYA, Sept 10 — Bersih today said an “inevitable” repeat of the massive street rallies for electoral reforms if the Election Commission (EC) continues to snub demands from polls watchdogs.

Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, the co-chairman of Bersih, indicated that the EC has so far failed to meet calls for it to clear the voter list of irregularities before a redrawing of constituency lines set for this year.

“If the EC perseveres with the redelineation without cleaning up the electoral roll, if they continue ignoring as they have in the past what we ask of them, then I think Bersih 4.0 is inevitable,” Ambiga (picture) told the crowd at the launch of Pemantau’s report of polling offences during Election 2013.

She was responding to a question on whether there would be a Bersih 4.0 rally.

If the “Bersih 4.0” rally happens, it would be the fourth in the series of street rallies pushing for clean and fair elections that first took place in 2007.

But Ambiga also noted that Pemantau is set to present its report at Bersih’s People’s Tribunal, a panel that is set to begin its hearing next Wednesday.

She said that the public should wait for the findings of the People’s Tribunal.

“Let us for the moment give full support to the People’s Tribunal.

“This is our chance to get at the truth,” she added.

Pemantau – a collective initiative by Bersih 2.0, Mafrel and Pusat Komas – saw over 2,000 citizens being recruited to observe the 13th general election.
