Bersih tribunal report on Friday - ( M4L4YS14 )

The People’s Tribunal, organised by election watchdog Bersih 2.0 to investigate irregularities in GE13, will be presenting its report and suggestions on Friday.

This was announced by tribunal chairman Yash Pal Ghai after listening to the last witness, Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, today.

The tribunal, which began on September 18 and ended today, featured five local and foreign panelists.

The foreign panelists are Ramlan Surbakti (former deputy chairman of the Indonesian Electoral Commission) and Kraisak Choonhavan (president of the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus, a former senator and deputy leader of the Democrat Party of Thailand).

The Malaysians on the tribunal are lawyer Datuk Azzat Kamaludin (former administrative and diplomatic officer with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Dr Mavis Puthucheary (former associate professor from the Faculty of Economics and Administration, University of Malaya) and Rev Dr Herman Shastri (general secretary of the Council of Churches of Malaysia).

The Election Commission and Barisan Nasional refused to participate in the tribunal even though they were invited.

Ambiga in her presentation said the move to conduct the tribunal was to find the truth about what happened during the general election and not meant to cause disharmony among Malaysians.

“We want to find the truth and justice. This will not destroy the country. In fact this will only make the country stronger.

“The only thing that will destroy our country is corruption,” she said after the tribunal session ended today. – September 22, 2013
