PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has thrown his weight behind party president Abdul Hadi Awang to retain his post at the party’s coming muktamar, or general assembly.
The former Kelantan Menteri Besar was however coy about expressing similar support for the party’s deputy president Mohamad Sabu, who is expected to face a stiff challenge from the ulama faction.
“I pray and urge that if possible, Haji Hadi, who is experienced and knowledgeable, be allowed to remain as president, but let the deputy be contested and I would of course want an ulama to be his deputy,” Nik Aziz was quoted as saying by Malay daily Sinar Harian. He was
speaking after his weekly religious lecture in Kota Bharu, yesterday.
A Kedah PAS leader Fauzi Tahir had reportedly stated his intention to contest the president’s post.
The party’s 59th muktamar will be held on November 22 in Selangor. – September 7, 2013.
